The most important part of any process is making sure that you keep moving forward. Over the past month, I’ve forgotten that very important point.
In the process of querying for Over the Edge, I’ve let most everything else fall to the wayside – beta reading, writing on Infinity’s Heir, developing new story ideas, or writing anything else. My last few posts have highlighted Inspiration and the drive to move Onward, but those come after a dry spell that lasted for far longer than it should have.
That’s because I forgot what was important.
I’m a writer (and a damn good one, I think). Whether I feel the need to put words to paper, that need is there. Even if I make the excuse that I’m taking a break or relaxing, that will never replace the insistent drive to create. And regardless of whether you are a writer or not, having the drive to do something and the will to carry through are two separate things.
I’ve often seen a quote attributed to Bruce Lee that I like to keep in mind whenever I do things: Long-term consistency trumps short-term intensity.
More than anything, this quote highlights the importance of constantly moving forward – taking baby steps towards your next goal. For a while now, I’ve been thinking that goal is to be published, but when I take a step back and look at where I am – where I’m going – I realize that the real goal is to write the next story that’s filling my mind. This doesn’t mean that querying for Over the Edge isn’t important, just that it isn’t the thing I should be focusing most of my attention on.
So, while I’ll continue to query for that story (and hope that I can get it published somewhere), my main focus will return to writing.
I hope that everyone who takes the time to read this can also continue focusing on what they’re working on, taking one baby step after another towards their next goal. After all, in life there is no finish line, just the next step towards greatness.
